What Causes Zombies?
While the exact reason may never be explained, there are a few insights to zombie causes:
• Voodoo - Voodoo and the black arts is the most logical answer to what causes a zombie; its origins tracing back to Haiti over hundreds of years. This generally involves a voodoo priest poisining a human to near-death lifelessness. Read about the Voodoo Zombie for more information.
• Radiation - As described in the original Night of the Living Dead, radiation from a space probe may be a zombie cause. The space probe is purported to have exploded - its fallout reanimating dead bodies on Earth.
• Virus - Many zombie movies, such as 28 Days Later, cite a genetically enhanced virus as a zombie cause. The virus begins with a cold or flu-like symptoms, tearing through a person's immune system, eventually resulting in death and imminent reanimation. Depending on the virus, (or the film you are watching), the living dead can either be shambling, incoherent messes, or rabid animal-like lunatics.
• Mad Scientist - Ocassionally you will find that not all zombie causes are due to unknown circumstances. Take Dr. Herbert West for instance, from the film Re-Animator. Determined to prove there can be life after death, he invented a solution that can restore motor function to the deceased. But with deadly results.
• Hell is Full - One of the most frightening zombie causes is - simply put - Hell is full. Like Peter's grandaddy once said, and repeated in Dawn of the Dead, "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth." Listen to clip. Could this be subtely stating that people are inherently evil?
