History of Zombie Movies

Zombie movies date back as far as 1932. However, the zombie at that time was slightly different than what modern day filmmakers have done with the mythos. Films like White Zombie and Revenge of the Zombies from the early 1930's deal more with voodoo than a flesh-hungry, brain-eating monstrosity.

It wasn't until the 50's and 60's that zombie movies ventured into the need for human flesh. I Eat Your Skin is a prime example. Though still controlled by a supernatural or satanic force, cannibalism had begun to make its way into zombie films.

In 1968 when George A. Romero came along and completely revolutionized zombie movies to this day. His masterpiece Night of the Living Dead was and will continue to be a force to be reckoned with. These zombies were not being controlled by a master or supernatural force - they lived in a world somewhere between life and death, driven by their need to devour the living. This made zombie movies infinitely more interesting and upsetting, as they were basically still us, only without emotion (or motor skills).

The next few years found an overabundance of zombie films produced around the world. Some for better (The Beyond), and many for worse (The Alien Dead). Our undead friends found a way to wreak havoc on any possible terrain; including water (Zombie Lake), gardens (Garden of the Dead), and even nudist colonies (Nudist Colony of the Dead).

The 70's and 80's were the years of the Italian splatter films. Directors like Lucio Fulci would create some of their most vile, yet groundbreaking zombie movies during this period. Back in America, George Romero continued the groundbreaking, thought provoking work known for in Dawn of the Dead and the epic Day of the Dead (both zombie films were re-envisioned in the 2000's - some good 'Dawn of the Dead 2004 Remake,' and some not-so-good 'Day of the Dead 2007 Remake'). Zombie movies were becoming more campy in the mid-late 80's, reflecting the times around them. Soundtracks for Return of the Living Dead and Hard Rock Zombies were even backed with hair bands and spandex pants.

In the last few years, zombie movies have become the rage once again. Mr. Romero finally released his zombie movie installments, Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead, while other directors found new ways to re-invent the genre; from uber-viruses (28 Days Later, Undead, Grindhouse Presents: Planet Terror) to zombie pet care (Fido) and high school proms (Dance of the Dead) to sleazy strip clubs (Zombie Strippers). The first Rom Zom Com, or romantic zombie comedy, was also officially christened with the release of the enormously successful Shaun of the Dead in 2004.
